It is in the air that Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will after all relinquish the premiership. There are indications that Statutory Declaration (SD) hunting is underway to garner support for a candidate aligned with Muhyiddin Yassin to be appointed as the next Prime Minister of Malaysia.
It will not be surprising that Muhyiddin will bargain for some important positions for his friends who had been loyal, and protected him during his premiership of infamy.
It is abundantly clear that Muhyiddin used similar method to become the Prime Minister and to everyone’s dismay, disappointment and pain and mental anguish he did so to fortify his position.
What we can learn from this SD culture is that members of Parliament will be richly rewarded if they will support a person to be the Premier whose credentials are suspect. Muhyiddin has shown that he could maneuver everyone with rewards. He only thought about his position, his political power.
Did he think about Malaysians? Did he think about Malaysia? Hardly so, because, he was loyal to his own brand of politics. He could not think as a Malaysian, he could not come out of the narrow-minded politics he was deeply in.
SD culture of politics has clearly demonstrated that it can be used to undermine the democratic process. If a serving Prime Minister does not command the majority in the House of Representatives, then, the proper thing is for him to resign and let the House of Representatives decide who should be their next leader. No one else should decide who can be their leader and eventually become Prime Minister. That is the position under Federal Constitution.
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong should not be troubled with the choosing of the Prime Minister even when there is uncertainty as to who commands the confidence in the House of Representatives. The elected members of Parliament should make the final decision.
The time has come for all of us to Speak for Malaysia, Speak for Malaysians.
