LAUNCH OF DOMESTIC WORKERS CAMPAIGN

-Domestic Workers Campaign Coalition, October 4, 2013.

DOMESTIC WORK IS WORK.  DECENT WORK, DECENT WAGE, & DECENT LIFE FOR DOMESTIC WORKERS

On the 6th of October 2013, the Domestic Workers Campaign Coalition will launch the next phase of the campaign to recognize the rights of domestic workers in Malaysia. In the past five years since the campaign was first launched, domestic workers continue to be held in various states of slavery & bonded labor in Malaysian homes.

Last year, a 24 year old Cambodian domestic worker was found dead in Penang. She weighed only 26.4kgs, her body starved to death in the Malaysian island state famed for its rich variety of food. In the past 8-10 years, Tenaganita has assisted more than 2000 domestic workers seek justice for various abuses and violations of their rights by agents & employers in Malaysia.

This phase of the campaign is to recognize domestic work is work to ensure decent work and decent wages for domestic workers, and the recognition of their right to a decent life in Malaysia.

The campaign will be launched by YB Chong Eng, the Penang State Gov. EXCO member in charge of Youth, Sports, Women, Family & Community.

A mobile campaign bus will travel to various points across Penang Island, and end the journey at Gurney Plaza.
