YOURSAY ‘We all know what would happen if vernacular schools were to close.’

Education in a mess, but Umno refuses to fess up

‘Opposition not fuelled by Chinese schools’

Education mess Rojak: I have always felt that, ideally, all Malaysians would go to the same state schools so that racial barriers would break down.

Ideally these schools would concentrate on academic standards and leave religious and political matters to institutions beyond the school gates.

Ideally they would teach in both Bahasa Malaysia and English and give all kids, whatever their ethnic background, a chance to learn Mandarin and Tamil too.

However, as the ‘sekolah kebangsaan’ (national schools) get worse and worse, this ideal slips further and further away.

We all know that if the vernacular schools were closed, there would be a huge flight to the private sector, with even poor families scrimping and saving to give their children the chance for a decent education.

Thinking Citizen_1403620863: When I was young, I was sent by my parents to a government school with English as the medium of instruction.

The next generation sent their children to national schools with additional tuition for English language at home. The current generation sent their children to Chinese vernacular schools with English tuition at home.

Likewise, there are many Malays who send their children to Chinese vernacular schools and the more affluent ones to foreign-run schools with English as the medium of instruction.

What does this development indicate? The public have lost faith in government-run schools. That’s the truth and admit it.

For your information, the students in vernacular schools have to study hard to meet the academic expectations of these schools.

They go there to study hard in a hope of a better future. They have no time to ‘politic’ around amd no time to join opposition parties.

Dire Straits: Umno’s annual assembly is fast approaching, so minor nincompoop leaders such as Petaling Jaya Utara Umno deputy division chief Mohamad Azli Mohemed Saad are trying to “out-racist” one another to get the attention of top party leaders, hoping to get multi-million ringgit government projects as champion racists.

This is an annual happening, as sure as spring follows winter.

Multi Racial: That is why Malaysia, if continue to be ruled by Umno, will fail.

Instead of questioning the government why our education system has deteriorated over the decades, they want the only working system – the vernacular schools – to be closed down as well.

Instead of questioning the government why oil producing countries charge their citizens much cheaper petrol, an Umno leader even sees fit to praise the PM for the hike in fuel cost.

Instead of questioning the government why there is no transparency in Petronas as it only reports to PM, some Umno leaders even defended such a practice.

Instead of questioning the authorities why so many detainees died under police custody, some even see it necessary to defend the government on this.

Instead of questioning the government why our police chief can get away not following the law he is entrusted to enforce, some see it necessary to defend him for his recalcitrant action.

Until and unless Umno delegates at the party assembly next month hold the government accountable, nothing will change.

Kawak: If Gerakan and MCA are brave enough, they must lodge police reports against the Umno PJ Utara deputy chief for calling of the abolition of Chinese-medium schools.

There are clear precedents in court cases of Melan Abdullah v Public Prosecutor and Mark Koding v Public Prosecutor, where both were charged under the Sedition Act.

This will also act as a litmus test whether there has been selective enforcement of the Sedition Act.

Vijay47: Gerakan Youth deputy chief Andy Yong, congratulations on your response to Umno regarding vernacular schools, a statement that one would think was actually made by opposition leaders Anwar Ibrahim or Lim Kit Siang.

You have correctly identified the evil within Umno’s policies and actions, and you actually went beyond education to all those fields where Umno has consistently reflected its immersion in corruption, discrimination, and abuse.

Since you are so aware of all these injustices, why is Gerakan still in Barisan Nasional? Isn’t your continued presence perpetuating and bolstering Umno’s schemes?

Secondly, why is only Gerakan’s Youth wing, and that too the deputy chief condemning Umno? Where are your president and other leaders?

But I must admit their reticence is most welcome if all they can do is come out with spineless platitudes like your boss, Mah Siew Keong, did recently.

Thirdly, Mr Tough Guy IGP (inspector-general of police), what are you going to do about Mohamad Azli? Any call to abolish vernacular schools is expressly against the Sedition Act and former MP Mark Koding can testify to that.

2Kali5: Without going into the merits of Mohamad Azil’s reasoning for wanting to close vernacular schools in that it is source of fueling opposition in particular DAP, perhaps he should also check whether religious schools are fueling PAS.

If so, he should also call on the government to close all religious schools.

Anonymous_1399936148: I am Chinese by race. I attended government schools. My primary language is English. I am a TARC (Tunku Abdul Rahman College) student.

I used to vote for MCA. Now I vote ABU (Anything But Umno). Why? Because BN policies is killing Malaysia. It revels in racial politics and gangsterism.

My country is dying and my heart bleeds. Of course, I support the opposition.
