PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali accused Umno Youth members of harassing his family at their Ampang home last night, after anti-graft officials were directed to reopen a RN30 million corruption probe on him.
“The police have arrived at my residence to monitor attacks by more than 20 Umno Youth members on motorcycles here to disturb my family,” the former Umno man posted on his Twitter account @azminali at 11.34pm yesterday.
Sinar Harian reported today that the group had assembled at 10pm and only dispersed when the police arrived around 11.30pm.
Azmin (picture) has yet to respond to calls from The Malaysian Insider.
The Gombak MP had left on a flight for Sabah earlier this morning.
Yesterday, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) was directed to reopen an investigation on Azmin over claims he owns RM30 million in assets, following a complaint lodged by the PKR leader’s estranged sister Ummi Hafilda Ali.
Azmin has been accused by Ummi Halfilda a regular speaker at Umno talks, to have amassed assets beyond his means as a civil servant between 1995 and 1997 when he was private secretary to Anwar, who was then deputy prime minister.
Recently, several talks and programmes organised by the party have been marred with violence.
On May 24, a PKR ceramah featuring Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and daughter Nurul Izzah Anwar turned ugly when the crowd as well as opposition leaders were pelted with stones and eggs. Some 100 Lembah Pantai Umno youth members were earlier seen blocking the main road leading to the PKR ceramah venue, carrying banners which read “Anwar causes violence in this country.”
PKR’s ceramah had an unceremonious start as guest speakers tried to speak as loudly as they could to compete with the Umno ceramah nearby.
Chaos occurred when Nurul Izzah was about to speak — the wiring to the sound and lights system was cut, delaying the Lembah Pantai MP’s speech by a good 15 minutes.
Shortly after she spoke, Anwar arrived and that was when the stone- and egg-pelting commenced.
The night saw one major casualty where a senior citizen suffered injuries to the head after being hit with a stone.
Similar incidents in Merlimau and Malacca have also been reported earlier this month.
