KUALA LUMPUR, May 25: Batu Gajah MP V Sivakumar today completed his adjournment speech in the second chambers in the Parliament regarding the SJK (T) Slim River termite infestation that been hanging for five years.
The purpose of Siva’s speech today was regarding the safety of some 200 students in the school and to also receive answers on from the Education Ministry on the matter.
But when contacted last week, Siva told The Malaysian Times (TMT) that the motion was to get an immediate answer from the Education Ministry, as the issue has been severely delayed and the children’s lives are at risk.
On Saturday, Deputy Education Minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan had said that upon the second inspection on May 19th, the Public Works Department (JKR) have concluded that the building in question does look like it has been infested by termites.
However, Kamalanathan added that some of the kindergarten classroom can be fixed and re-used as the structure of the building still seems solid.
In 2012, JKR had reported that the building, which is the canteen and kindergarten is infested by termites and that the building should not be used and that it ought to be demolished.
Upset parents said that moving the kindergarten students to the library would not make much of a difference, as all the students would use the canteen for their break.
TMT learnt that, there have been claims that some parts for the ceiling in the canteen have collapsed, though no one was injured.
200 student and 35 kindergarten students and several other teachers and staff currently accommodate the school and are at risk of getting hurt.—TMT
