YOURSAY | ‘Mahathir’s failure was that he believed the ends justified the means.’

Dr M is facing his ‘karma’, Najib will soon too

Confession of a former admirer of Dr Mahathir

yrsaykaramayoursay-EnglishAnonymous Hotplate: Writer Yeong Pey Jung, it is true that Malaysia once underwent economic and political turmoil under Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s rule, but the country is now facing even worse turmoil of all sorts, not only economic and political but also racial provocation.

Who is to blame for all these?

What the Dickens: I believe that Dr M has realised his past mistakes and is sincerely contrite about it. He is atoning for his past sins.

Let’s try not to be too judgmental. He is a senior citizen and an elder statesman with not many more years to live.

Dr M deserves a second chance, just like all of us. We should grant him at least the benefit of the doubt – that he can still help to correct the many wrongs in our beloved country.

Jasper: Mahathir’s failure was that he believed the ends justified the means. But I believe he always worked for the good of the nation (as he saw it).

I think he has now realised that the means he employed have created an environment that can be exploited by those who have more selfish aims as all the checks and balances are gone.

But I have to respect any 91-year-old who is still willing to fight hard to right the mistakes he made.

Goldee: Yeong, I too admired Dr M especially his ‘Bersih, Cekap dan Amanah motto when he came to power. But my admiration for him was short-lived.

Dr M’s policies are good but the implementation was ineffective. The New Economic Policy (NEP) policy was hijacked by his cronies.

He made many mistakes along the way because people around him had fed him with rubbish, especially his fallout with his deputies. The rest is history.

His support of Bersih shows he is trying to correct the wrongs during this tenure. This is a good sign. I foresee him trying to bring Malaysia back to the correct path because under the current government things are worse off than before.

Anonymous 610861447515992: What Dr M is facing now is his karma. He was flying high during his days but towards the end of his life, God makes him realise his mistakes and misdeeds.

He may not admit to all he has done as no thief will admit he was stealing. But we should support anyone who repents.

I was and am still his admirer for his far-sighted vision and mission, which none of the following PMs have. And PM Najib Razak will face his karma soon.

Hornbill will soar: I think many of us share the writer’s views about Mahathir. I disagree with those who patronisingly told Yeong to move on.

There is nothing wrong to reflect on the past, especially for a socio-political analyst. That’s what such analysts are expected to do.

Send in the Clowns: To those condemning Mahathir, I reflected on my religious teachings I received and found it appropriate to share it with my fault finders.

“He who have not sinned, cast the first stone.” And if you pointed your finger at someone, be aware four fingers are pointing back at you.

I do not defend Mahathir for his misdeeds but to achieve political gains against the Umno evil regime, my humble opinion is, he is still useful to our cause, which is to demolish kleptocracy.

Fairperson: Well said. If Mahathir is for true, clean and just government, he should first and foremost publicly regret for his past deeds and apologise.

He never seems to admit his past wrongs but only focuses on Najib’s removal which cast some doubts on his sincerity. This old man cannot be trusted.

Roguekiller: Indeed, a precise analysis of Mahathir’s past transgression. I am also doubtful of him repenting and remorseful of his past, but I am quite certain his main aim is to get rid of Najib.

However, whether in pretence or otherwise, he has displayed something hopeful – relentlessly and unwaveringly fighting for our cause, though with little or no success yet.

Is he turning over a new leaf? I honestly hope so and if it is, with the combined strength of the opposition front, I hope and wish for a better Malaysia becoming reality.

Applause greets Jamal at Wanita Umno meet

Unafraid: The passionate welcome and exuberant applause that Jamal received at the Umno General Assembly confirms what all of us have suspected all along, that is that this gangster is backed by the party.

How is it possible that a party that touts itself as championing the cause for all Malaysians can be seen to support such a bigot and ruffian? It makes nonsense of every noble value that Umno stands for.

The lesson to learn is never trust what the Umno leaders say about fairness and justice for all Malaysians because they are pure rhetoric.

Clearly, they will not hesitate to use whatever means to maintain dominance, even resorting to intimidation and bullying tactics.

Slumdog: It is difficult to comprehend the attitude, mentality and mindset of Wanita Umno when an incorrigible thug, bully, troublemaker like Jamal can be greeted with thunderous applause and treated like a folklore hero.

These women have obviously lost all concepts of propriety and righteousness and cannot tell the difference between right and wrong. This is the result of years of Umno brainwashing.

Negarawan: Umno denied countless times that it has nothing to do with Jamal’s acts of racism, violence and hatred, but now a standing ovation is given to him in its general assembly.

Umno has become a fortress for the corrupt, with a membership guaranteeing that they can continue with their corrupt activities unimpeded. This is truly abominable and disgusting.
