YOURSAY | ‘The main task of the new AG is to stymie the investigations on 1MDB.’

We all know why Apandi was tabbed as AG

G25 brands AG ‘arrogant and crude’ for belittling group

yrsayapandi Kingfisher: It would seem that the attorney-general (AG) was rather brash with his pointed remark that members of G25 are “has-beens”.

He perhaps is not convinced to lateral thinking regarding the AG’s role in the local context where there have been some legitimate concerns about the independence and objectivity of the AG’s Chambers.

However, considering his recent appointment and the fact that he is positioned to give a righteous decision on a crucial national issue regarding allegations of abuse of executive powers, it is a wait-and-see as to how he conducts himself.

Some have hope that he will ultimately uphold national interest as per the law of the land.

There is little doubt that many would agree that there is some serious anomaly regarding the role of advisor on legal matters to the government and prosecutor of the same government on infringement of laws in circumstances when the government becomes “too” powerful.

Jesse: That is the sort of arrogant government appointees’ response to legitimate questions that we have come to expect – just brush them off instead of providing proper answers.

He is an appointee with a swollen head, and probably, half-senile, judging by his answers and ignorance of the role of AG and public prosecutor in other countries.

This double role is anachronistic. Its ineffectiveness in Malaysia have been amply demonstrated over the past decade.

Ipohcrite: Apandi was handpicked by PM Najib Razak to be AG due his special talents.

Surprisingly (some would say, not surprisingly) those talents do not include knowledge and familiarity with current legal developments in leading Commonwealth countries.

Bamboo: Indeed, the main tasks of the new AG are to stymie the investigations on 1MDB and protect the underlings of Umno who fan racist fires.

CQ Muar: This is a clear evidence how power-crazy Apandi can be when G25 came up with the proposal to remove the powers of prosecution by the AG.

Feeling unhappy over the proposal, Apandi rebutted (read: insult) by calling them “has-beens”.

Other major or advanced countries have done away with such twin roles of the AG – as legal advisor to the government and as chief of prosecution – which is clearly a conflict of interest.

Apandi’s sentiment is quite understandable, as this will jeopardise and deprive him of full power in the eyes of the prime minister.

The Analyser: Here we go again with the Malaysian (this time Malay) ego not being able to accept any form of criticism.

The reality of the G25 is that they are indeed “has-beens”. But what is worse is that they are seeking to perpetuate the sort of religion-dominated Malaysian society which is quite clearly dysfunctional to anyone but their eminent selves.

The average age of the Malaysian population is 27, the youngest man in parliament is 39 and he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth.

And now we have a bunch of geriatrics headed up by a 93-year-old, all of whom are has-beens who have been responsible for untold damage to this country and its people.

And yet they still think they have something to add to the future. I would argue that they have never had any vision and that is why Malaysia is going backwards in almost every regard.

I commend Malaysiakini going out of its way to give young people their say, the likes of top debater Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman. But there needs to be more done, much more.

The response to some of Syed Saddiq’s comments shows how much Malaysia is in need of some new minds with new ideas and new hopes and some vision which will help Malaysia break away from its constipated past and all that goes with it.

FairGame: That is the gist of the point. Why do ruling politicians and civil servants alike not voice out their concerns when they are still in service?

Why are they beholden to the unscrupulous leaders during their time, when corruption, abuses and extremist views are expressed by those in power?

In the end, it is all about self-interest. That is why the AG does not give a hoot about these ‘retirees’.

Anonymous 29051438068738: Clearly the G25 still does not realise that Apandi was handpicked by the RM2.6 billion mastermind not for his legal and intellectual prowess but for his willingness to do his bidding.

Didn’t he (the mastermind) declare that loyalty was more important to him than anything else?

Tan Kim Keong: Based on his response to G25, it is very clear that Apandi lacks legal substance.

Instead of putting forward a counter argument against the suggestion by G25 to strip the AG off his prosecution powers, he made disparaging remarks about them. That also showed his true character.

This is why he is beholden to the one who appointed him. He is anything but an expert on the constitution and legal matters. I supposed at the end of the day, God will judge him.
