A celebration of living life in the moment, while honouring those less fortunate.
The Idea
A world record breaking attempt for the largest number of people dancing a Bollywood routine in different locations, in order to raise a minimum of RM20,000 for two local charity being Agathians Shelter and Persatuan Penjagaan Kanak-Kanak Cacat Klang. We are helping our fellow friends in UK to break the current record of close to 4,500 people.
We are appealing to friends and colleagues to help us make this event a success. There will be events set to take place in Capetown, Edinburgh (a prison!), New Zealand, Manipal, London, Kathmandu and Petaling Jaya so far.
We suggest a small RM10 fee from each participant to contribute towards our RM20,000 target.
We hope to gather 1,000 people to dance to the track Jai Ho. With the help of a renowned choreographer, Jay Kumar a routine has been devised and uploaded to Youtube so participants can familiarise themselves with the dance.
The inspiration
Sophie Parr, a 24 year old, vivacious redhead from Somerset, lived life to the full and loved music, especially Bollywood. In the 16 days between her diagnosis and her passing, Sophie set up a blog that raised money for Macmillan cancer support and we are going to continue her legacy.
The plan
We have posted the 4 minute routine on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbyVBe0pPRc simple enough that anyone – no matter what age, race, gender, or fitness level – can bhangra, to their heart’s content.
At the BollyforCharity event, there will be enough dance captains around to teach the routine again and help the more rhythmically challenged of us. After one or two rehearsals, we will go for the record.
The whole event, from start to finish, will be approx 60-90 mins.
Given the number of people expected (1,000 – 2,000), there will be 20 volunteer marshals to make sure everyone’s safe and having a good time. Our volunteers include ex-Sri Amanians and we’ll be making sure they get their Bolly on too!
The team
This event is supported by the Persatuan Alumni Sekolah Menengah (P) Sri Aman , Taman Gembira Foundation , and Ace-Youth.
