Uthaya, it’s not the time to give up
Umno gov’t killed Hindraf, says Uthayakumar
Peacemaker: Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) founder P Uthayakumar is a man of principle. He faced all the challenges and never feared to voice out for the community.
He prevailed when MIC failed to highlight the Indian community’s issues. He opened the eyes of Malaysians, made the government sit up and in fact Hindraf was the catalyst of change in GE12 (2008).
They gave the courage to Malaysians to stand up against the corrupted government. It’s disunity that killed Hindraf. It’s time to restrategise and the best way is to support Pakatan Rakyat.
Msian1st: Indeed, Hindraf killed Hindraf by not supporting Pakatan.
Otakechik: Don’t blame the government, Umno or anyone else for the movement’s failure. The Indians have themselves to blame. Zero cohesiveness among them.
There may be no Indian-majority seat but you can be a kingmaker. Learn from DAP supremeo Lim Kit Siang who studied and analysed every constituency.
Appum: In time to come, there will be no such Indian or Chinese majority seats any more. So you shouldn’t depend on that. I agree with Msian1st, Hindraf killed Hindraf by not going along with Pakatan. That’s the price you pay for arrogance.
Dont Just Talk: After squatting in the prison for 24 months, Uthayakumar has admitted defeat and come to his senses, realising that Malaysia is a multi-racial, multi-religious country.
Hindraf can play the role of a spoiler by joining hands with Pakatan, like during the 2008 GE and together with moderate, ‘bersih’ Malaysians of all races, vote for a change of government in Putrajaya.
Give the new government under Pakatan a term or two and gauge their performance. If proven that they are no better than BN, then like in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, India, etc, Malaysians will vote them out.
Undoubtedly, Uthayakumar has sacrificed for the poor, exploited, homeless Indian communities and he has to reflect on which path Hindraf should take next.
Anonymous_1392114217: Uthayakumar, you are not alone in being defeated by the Umno government. There are other Malaysians, including the Malays, who were cheated by their beautiful slogans, empty promises and cunning manipulations.
Alfanso: Indeed, never make that mistake again. Don’t blame Umno or MIC, it is human nature. So you want to be the seagull that flies higher and you will be, but don’t blame the seagull that prefers to remain on the rocks.
It is good you got the point now, but there is a lot more to learn.
Thana55: Uthaya, your movement lost traction due to its race-centric approach. Here is a learning experience for all other race-centric parties, including Umno, MCA and MIC. The future is with the parties riding on needs-based or issues-based platforms.
Real Truth: Uthaya, does it matter that there were five Hindraf leaders including you. It is not in us to unite, that’s the problem. We would still have disagreements among us, even without outside influences, since we follow multiple gods.
So my word is we have a major problem when we have multitude of caste and creed thrown in with different philosopies.
We have so much diversity, it is impossible to unite. During independence, we had one political party that mutated many times such that we have now a dozen political parties.
This, too, is a creation of Umno to dilute the little strength that we possess. Blame ourselves first before blaming others.
Visu: A great realisation but at a very high cost. When S Samy Vellu wanted to raise funds for Maika Holdings, he went around literally promising and guaranteeing a fantastic future for the Indians in Malaysia.
After many had placed their hopes and trust on this promise, they all found out that they were not only impoverished financially but had put their trust in a confidence trickster.
Then come Uthayakumar, unplanned, big ego like Uncle Sam, promising heaven and earth for the Indians, even filing a case against Britain for compensation.
Surely the smart and educated Indians saw through this. They never believed that you could succeed yet they sympathised with you.
Although all Indians were marginalised, the poor and uneducated found you appealing. But they all have paid a price trusting yet another Indian. Like everyone else you, too, have stopped fighting because you have exhausted your capacity.
Although you were never be like the MIC man who enriched himself and was motivated by greed, you still let your ego loose and intellectual inability to further deprive the Indian trust bank.
Now you too (unknowingly?) have withdrawn whatever little trust the Indians had from this bank. This is reflected in your defeatist statement. Is this a tale of two great Indian traitors?
Dex: Uthaya, we all know that you suffered for the Indians. But the painful truth was that there were no five leaders but only one big ego – that was yours…
Abasir: Uthaya, unlike the keyboard warriors in Malaysiakini and other online media, you have striven for your beliefs, created a movement which did tilt the balance in 2008, sacrificed your personal freedom and your family life for a cause bigger than yourself when you could have safely remained a clever commenter like so many.
You have not failed. Instead you have shown up the fashionably righteous, the clueless and the gutless for what we are.
Drngsc: Yes, Umno was cunning. And yes, Hindraf has not only failed but it helped Umno against us. I am sure your younger brother (Waythamoorthy) realises it now that he was lured and cheated. It’s too late to express regret.
Please use whatever years you have left to consolidate your forces and do battle again. We need every able bodied Malaysian to change this government. No one can do it alone. Together we can.
We must not give up, Uthaya. We must battle on. We fall, we get up, and march on. Malaysia expects everyone who loves Malaysia to do their best. We must change the tenant at Putrajaya. We must save Malaysia from Umno.
