Utusan attacks Marina Mahathir on hudud
Firestone: Social activist Marina Mahathir speaks for and on behalf of many Malaysians who are voiceless and afraid to speak up and she must continue to do so. She must not be silenced and bullied or threatened to keep quiet on major issues.
Marina, if you are reading this, please continue to speak out for us – the weak ones. Please do not be cowed.
Ferdtan: When Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia, which is seen to be the official mouthpiece of the ruling Umno government, targets a person/or company, caution must be taken.
An example was when Utusan targeted Malaysiankini, whether it was a coincident or not, soon after that PM Najib Razak instituteda legal suit against the news portal over its readers’ comments.
This time it is targeting Marina for her comments on hudud. Marina, to her credit, has spoken out bluntly on controversial issues which are dear to the hearts of most moderate Malaysians.
She escaped prosecutions, unlike many other activists, because she is the daughter of former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad. That is perhaps the only advantage she has compared to others.
It looks like that may end soon as her father is currently on the opposing side of Najib’s government.
Negarawan: “I cannot live in a country where people want to cut off hands, I’m sorry, or stone people to death,” said Marina.
Marina is certainly not alone. Many fair-minded Muslims and non-Muslims feel the same. Hudud is just a false cover for the corrupt regime to portray itself as Islamic.
Hudud aims to maim the petty thief and criminal, while the grand thief, who is also the cunning architect of hudud, gets away with the loot.
Unafraid: If Malaysians are to choose between Marina andUtusan, the choice is very clear. Marina wins hands down.
She is not only fearless but she is sensible and level-headed and is a respectable, good and faithful Muslim. She stands up for the poor and marginalised, irrespective of race or religion. She is a true Malaysian.
By using threats against her, Utusan’s Awang Selamat is no different from all the fundamentalists that we have had the displeasure to come across, such as Isma and Perkasa.
All that he has achieved is to raise the ire of right-thinking moderate Malaysians of all races who want to see our beloved country continue to prosper in peace and harmony and not become a laughing stock in the world by the implementation of hudud.
To Marina, we say, “Carry on, madam, we are all behind you. You will never walk alone.”
Vijay47: Marina, like many of the new generation of Malaysian women, is not an easy weak pushover who is going to wilt and faint when someone tries to intimidate her, least of all trash likeUtusan.
And popular as they are, they can conduct their battles by themselves, without having to rely on a huge retinue of paid assassins while the likes of Utusan can only huff and puff and bully aided by similar vermin.
What is comforting and assuring to the rest of Malaysians is that these women are true jewels, not ‘permata’.
Azhar: The truth is that Marina is not hurting the feelings of Muslims. She is in fact speaking on behalf of all thinking Muslims who are rational, logical and sensible.
I salute people like Marina who are leaders of courage and brave enough to speak the truth no matter what the consequences.
Swipenter: Marina is a jewel in the eyes of Malaysians. She is brave, fair, articulate and above all, intelligent. They have nothing against her except she being the daughter of Mahathir.
Mind you, no one can choose their parents. Many Muslims are also not in favour of hudud but they choose to keep quiet. Why?
The attack on Marina is why. Next on the crosshair of Utusan’spoison gun would be the billionaire sons of the Mahathir clan. That I would like to see what Utusan has to say.
Tok Karut: Did Marina become rich through government handouts or contracts during her father’s regime? Did she acquire a lavish lifestyle at home and abroad in New York and various capitals?
Fair Play: Strong Muslims like Marina and thousands of others can think and act like what they did because their minds are not shackled. And the right type of education will eventually unshackle the mind of the ignorant. But would they be given that chance?
Worldly Wise: The feelings of Muslims can never be hurt. Islam is a tolerant religion. Apologists in fundamentalist Islam have a divine duty to explain the hudud law to all and sundry.
God’s law should be easy to explain. And if it is God’s law, it will be easily understood by everyone. Please explain instead of attacking an honest woman like Marina Mahathir.
Apa Ini?: Someone tell me please, what’s the equivalent in the Quran to “let him who is without sin cast the first stone”?
Hudud advocates, do you really think anyone among the crowd could cast the first stone?
