We the Indian Malaysian citizens of this country make the following demands after careful evaluation of our present socio-economic, political and cultural situations against the background of British colonialism, forty-two years of Merdeka and nine general elections….
So reads the preamble of a document created by the Group of Concerned Citizens in 1999 (GCC). The initiators of GCC were K. Arumugam, Charles Santiago, Manogaran Marimuthu, S. Pasupathi, P. Kandasamy, S. Nagarajan, and M. Nadarajah. This 10 page document titled ‘Demands of the Indian Malaysians for A Better Future‘ was endorsed by PKR, DAP, PAS and PSM at a rally held at the Kuala Lumpur Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall in June 1999. The event witnessed a capacity crowd of over 3,000 people from all over the country. Arumugam, who served as the coordinator of the GCC recalls that the preparation of the said document was a result of a year long consultation with people from across the country. “We held 51 consultation meetings from Kedah to Johore” he said.
