COMMENT In 2007, the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) shook the nation in a spectacle unparalleled in the history of Malaysian political protest.
Despite threats from the police and pro-Barisan Nasional groups, more than 30,000 primarily underclass Indian Malaysians took to the streets of Kuala Lumpur, unafraid and resolute in their demands that the government looks into the sufferings and the deprivations of the community.
They marched in anger, hoping that they would be noticed and heard by the BN government for their near-60 years of neglect. But it was all in vain.
The head of Umno and the BN did what he was good at, which was to divide and fracture the movement. In this, he was more than successful. Hindraf leader P Uthayakumar was sent to jail. His brother P Waythamoorthy was made a deputy minister, while other Hindraf leaders were willing to abandon their struggle and meekly became apologists for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
I have not met Uthayakumar (photo) and I don’t know how popular he is or whether he is a good leader of the Indian community in Malaysia. However, I can feel his sincerity and commitment to fight for the poor and downtrodden. He has paid a heavy price for his struggle and I am sure he is still as committed as before.
I believe that a leader like Uthayakumar will never disappear into the sunset, no matter how hard his political opponents try to disable him. He is a man of steel and a believer in his struggles. He will succeed, one day.
I know his brother Waythamoorthy better. He is a lawyer and we have met a couple of times socially. He, too, is a committed leader of Hindraf and I hope his relationship with his brother has improved over the years.
Waytha was mistaken
Waytha was mistaken when he believed Najib would take care of the Indian community with his many promises. Najib would do enough for MIC, maybe, but he would not care for the poor, whether they were Indian or whatever other race.
Najib simply does not feel the pain of the deprived. He is an aristocrat who only knows the meaning of wealth, affluence glamour and comfort. He is not a leader for ordinary Malaysians.
Waytha (photo) redeemed himself by resigning the post of deputy minister. For that, I think he has done what was expected of a leader of a movement that had yet to achieve its objectives. It was a sacrifice on his part, of course, and we should congratulate him for doing the right thing – it’s nice to have an office in Putrajaya and appear in the national media every so often.
Waytha and Uthayakumar must now patch up whatever differences they might have and restart the movement that once troubled the BN. Hindraf can shake the establishment again and, this time, with success.
Hindraf must form a political party as quickly as possible. Its leaders will not be able to represent the Indian poor unless they get elected; and they will not get a seat in the next election just by making announcements of unconditional support for the opposition.
Opposition politicians think they are strong enough on their own and will talk about letting you contest a parliamentary seat – only if they think you are strong and can make them vulnerable.
For a team that has not won anything at federal level, the opposition is quite hard to please. They even discarded Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM), which was once their friend. They confirmed what I have always suspected: that in politics, you can only negotiate from a position of strength. Being nice and smart and honest will not get you very far.
This is not to say we must not try to form a strong coalition. Ideally, the Indian leaders in PKR and DAP should extend a hand of friendship to Hindraf; and plan a workable arrangement to optimise the chances of the opposition to unseat the BN government.
Do not feel perturbed if some people describe Hindraf as an “extremist organisation”… You cannot be more extreme than Umno and the red-shirts. Hindraf is committed in its belief that the Indian Malaysian community needs urgent help, and it is not extreme to believe in something that’s good for the country.
With only PSM, the working class is not represented very well in this country and needs more champions. Even some of the opposition leaders show no sympathy for the poor because they are elitists at heart. To them, poor people are dispensable.
We need to dismantle the privileges of the rich and the corrupt. There is no one better than Hindraf to start the ball rolling.

HINDRAF MR . UTHAYAKUMAR IS A MAN OF PRINCIPLE .
Both the brothers sacrificed dearly for this community. Hope they’re willingness to work unconditionally with opposition bring god for the community.
Opposition parties still practice ‘mandor ‘ kind of system and cannot be trusted when the betterment of Indian community is concerned. They could have done better when listen to HINDRAF ‘s basic conditions but ANWAR was ‘stone head ‘ when HINDRAF has tabled 18 basic needs . Now ANWAR in jail and eat the fruit for !
HINDRAF is not established because of these both brothers, Uthaya and Waytha. It was jointly organised by more than 40 Indian NGOs in this country. Both these brothers were just part of the organizing tea
We should not forget that HINDRAF became history because of the amazing holy gathering of our community after Bersih rally in 2007. History should not be forgotten. Credit should go to everyone. There are many people who led this struggle after HINDRAF Rally until Waythamoorthy chased them out strategically to hide his wrong conduct in March 2013.
Waytha moorthy has always been full of doubts. First he ran to London without informing his own brother and other lawyers. Then he came to Malaysia after he sought political asylum, no action taken by Police when he entered Malayisa.
Strange … then he started his forum nationwide without police interruption..Hunger strike drama….(sugar drink, energized water, one more salt drink .. I couldn’t recall.. and falsely fainted ..ate KFC immediately after admitted at the hospital) signed MOU…Oh… then one day he resigned as Deputy Minister in Prime Minister’s Department and after two weeks informed Najib agreed to his demands but he got upset when his sincerity was doubted and as a revenge his resigned.
Shocking rite…??? I came to know this by his own mouth in September 2015. The committee members urged him to sue BN. He refused and fought with them especially the founder of MOU Mr.Ganesan (Hindraf legal advisor). His malice strategic failed to convince me.
I truly joined this struggle for the sake of my community not gaining anything else. Now he started his new game…willing to work with Opposition unconditionally. He does have some good quality in the beginning, I didn’t denied that but at the same time he has his own political agenda from beginning.
I am not surprised as he is a criminal lawyer. I couldn’t find a proper terminology to describe him based on my past 9 years experience working with him. Anyway he his a good politician but a bad leader for our community. His new game has started. Waythmoorthy should remember GOD is watching him. I pray for him. He should rectify all his unnecessary revenge attitude, cheating and mislead the poor Indians in our country for his personal agenda. I’m not surprised if he sues me for defamation for the above statement.
He threatened all the ex-HINDRAF hardcore who led HINDRAF. For me they are the true HINDRAF Leaders and not this man. Anyway he has the face value while others don’t. I miss my HINDRAF (2007-2015).
I do agree with komalam in few issues, relating the Vethamoorthy ’s decision in the movement but the spirit of HINDRAF was started long before the 40 NGOs appointed them officially. The 40 Indian NGOs were assembled to know their decisions in regard to Indians’ plight and those 40 Indian NGOs were smartly pushed the responsibility of struggle to HINDRAF’s newly selected members. How smart they are! I still remember the day that HINDRAF Mr.Uthayakumar chaired the parliament round table conference for the illegal demolishment of temples in Malaysia. It was happened in 2006, approximately one year before the official commencement of HINDRAF. Please note one matter here that I don’t deny other members contribution to the movement, but the struggle has utterly deviated from the main theme due to various decisions of little Napoleons. HINDRAF had only one advisor that is the Mr.Uthayakumar, no one else. When recall the early days, sometime 2003, Mr.Uthayakumar has bravely raised his voice against authority on the brutal murder in police custody. His court proceedings were assisted by Manoharan Malayaalam and his own brother Vethamoorthy. This is where everyone started to notice Mr.Uthayakumar as human rights lawyer. Human rights are mixed with his blood no matter whether HIDRAF do exist or not. After several continuous cases of brutal murders in police custody and brutal acts on temple demolishment, HINDRAF brought the matter to 40 Indian NGOs to raise their voice. As I mentioned above, the 40 Indian NGOs useless leaders and failed to take the ‘responsibility of struggle’ but on contrary, pushed it to Uthayakumar’s leadership. On the other side, due to various legal issues, Uthayakumar appointed his own brother to lead the HINDRAF org, technically. If Uthayakumar is arrested by police for HINDRAF aggressive movement, then Vethamoorthy may take care of court proceedings. However, Vethamoorthy has suddenly switched to his own agenda and started to be obsessed with the triumphs of solving Indian difficulties. From here on, Vethamoorthy had his own agenda to over through Uthayakumar. In order to triumph, he needs to do something good for Indian, so he joined-force with UMNO led government. UMNO politician had their own agenda to fool Vethamoorthy and they also succeeded in it, leaving Vethamoorthy as traitor. Vethamoorthy was absolutely betrayed by politicians. Vethamoorthy could not digest his lost and kept on putting trust on UMNO politicians. Finally, it is now, the right time for Vethamoorthy to appoint Uthayakumar as new HINDRAF Leader. Dato ZAID IBRAHIM, pls help for this auspicious day. No matter what happens, my heart always cries for Uthayakumar as he has lost everything in his life. However, Uthayakumar has done what supposed to be done to uplift the Indian in democratic-process.
